Challenges in navigating from large rounded features. When an athlete misses the distance control while running along a rounded landforms, it's easy for them to end up in a parallel situation. This happens because the direction from the large feature aligns with the intended bearing.
The leaders on this leg chose a direct route for a reason: to establish a clear starting point (knoll) from which to begin the bearing based section towards the control point from the big hill.
