The Most Important Part — Before the Book Is Out

The Most Important Part — Before the Book Is Out I know some people tend to skip the intro sections of a book — honestly, I sometimes do too. 🙂 But that’s usually where all the thank-yous go. So I’d like to share mine here, in advance, before Confident Orienteering  Book 2: Planning Reliable Routes comes out on October 22, 2025 . Huge thanks to everyone who helped bring this book to life. It’s been a true team effort — and it simply wouldn’t be the same without your support. Many of you were already part of the journey with Confident Orienteering  Book 1: Fundamentals , and I’m genuinely grateful that the team stayed together (and even grew!). Thank you for your work, your feedback, your ideas, and your patience — it means a lot. ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS The first book of the Confident Orienteering Practical Guide took a year and a half to finish; the second — almost two years. In some ways, Book 2 felt easier: the process was familiar, and I knew readers were wa...

Confident Orienteering – Book 2: Last Steps to Publishing

Confident Orienteering – Book 2: Last Steps to Publishing From September 20th we will start the very last check — after that comes book registration and publishing! 🚀 Here’s a preview from the Introduction of the upcoming volume: Confident Orienteering — Introduction There is no better feeling in competition than running fast and knowing, with complete confidence, that your navigation will not let you down. The Confident Orienteering Practical Guide was created to give athletes a clear, practical system for reliable navigation under competitive conditions. With solid navigation, results improve, the effort you put into training feels worthwhile, and motivation to keep progressing comes naturally. When Book 1: Fundamentals was first published in 2023, the Practical Guide was planned as a two-volume work. However, in the process of developing the material it became clear that one more volume was needed to fully address the execution phase. The Practical Guide will therefore consis...

Book 2 Nears the Finish Line

Book 2 Nears the Finish Line Editors Ross Barnett and Clive Allen are now in the final stage of polishing Confident Orienteering Book 2: Planning Reliable Routes . Ross has already done two full read-throughs, which put me on an emotional high – and it’s still going! Clive has started the final proofread before layout. My wife, Svetlana (the book designer), and I are wrapping up the explanatory graphics for the illustrations. The test readers have also finished reading all the chapters. I’ll share their feedback once we start the layout phase. If all goes well, in about two weeks we’ll begin laying out Book 2. The goal is to release it in late September or early October. Fingers crossed everything runs smoothly in these last weeks. Work on Book 3 (Routes executing) is also moving fast. Only two chapters are left – and then the whole Practical Guide  'Confident Orienteering: A Systematic Approach to Minimising Errors' will be complete.  Editing is already underway on...

One Year of "Confident Orienteering"

One Year of "Confident Orienteering" A few days ago marked one year since I released my first book on orienteering in digital format. “Confident Orienteering: A Systematic Approach to Minimising Errors. Book 1: Fundamentals” dives into why mistakes happen in orienteering and provides strategies to avoid them.  The upcoming Book 2— Routes Planning and Execution —will focus on putting these strategies into action in real-life scenarios. Though we initially aimed to release it in 2024, it will now be ready by mid-2025 at the earliest. Progress is steady, and the same great team from Book 1 is still with me. We’ve completed about 70% of the text, but we still have a lot of work on illustrations, with over 300 examples planned. I’ll soon share a separate post about the amazing people contributing to this project, as well as one about Book 1 translations, highlighting the fantastic translators who made the book available in other languages. For now, I have two updates to share...

Seeking sponsorship for the print version of my O-book! Hello, Dear Orienteers!  I'm currently working on the second part of the 'Confident Orienteering' practical guide - Book 2. I plan to release it by the end of 2024. The entire team that worked on Book 1 is still involved in the project, and I am immensely grateful to them for their ongoing support. Without their help, this project wouldn't have come this far. The book was originally released in English less than 5 months ago, and people from 40 countries have already bought it. Additionally, it now has versions available in French and Ukrainian .  Versions  in Danish and Polish are expected very soon (within a few weeks). Currently, all of these versions are digital formats, except for the French version, which is also available in print thanks to translator Fabrice Laperque. I'm inspired by the look of the printed version of the first book and plan to release a print version of the original guide as well. A...

Book 1review

Book 1review   Today, I received the following review for my book "Confident Orienteering" Book 1: Fundamentals from Dmitry Bozhuk. "Hello, Aleksandr. I finished reading your book yesterday. It's fantastic, easy to follow with logical and consistent material. I've already recommended it to all my friends. During workouts, I started paying attention to some aspects that I used to overlook, for example, step count and the frequency of compass references. It really works. Thank you for your hard work! Looking forward to Book 2." the photo shows a printed copy of my book in French, translated by Fabrice Lapergue . the Book 1 is available here https://aliaksandr128.gumroad.com/l/jerzqm Aleksandr Alekseyonok, March 1, 2024

Editor's review of my book on orenteering

Editor's review of my book on orenteering Review by Clive Allen Confident Orienteering: a Systematic Approach to Minimising Errors; Book 1: Fundamentals by Aleksandr Alekseyonok This is the first of two brand new books about orienteering skills and techniques in non-urban terrain... Readers are assumed to have reached a competition level where they can read o-maps adequately, including some quite complex contour patterns and point detail, and relate them to the terrain. This book is a practical guide that will be of particular value to orienteers from intermediate to elite level who are keen to improve their route choice and execution skills and cut out mistakes, and perhaps most of all to their coaches. The approach here is clear-cut: “A thorough understanding of why and when errors occur, and their classification, is crucial when planning and executing a route.” A large part of the book is devoted to closely analysing the nature and extent of errors that are made when mea...

"Confident Orienteering" in now also in Ukrainian

On February 1, 2024, 'Confident Orienteering: Book 1' is released in Ukrainian. I extend my deepest gratitude to Dudnik Illia, Kobets Svitlana, Petrov Vitalii, Pitirimova Olena, and Polianytsia Stanislav for their exceptional work in translating this book into Ukrainian. I hope that this guide proves valuable for Ukrainian orienteers, many of whom have been compelled to leave their homes, losing their usual orienteering connections and, in some cases, finding themselves without coaches. The English version is available here Aleksandr Alekseyonok, January 25, 2024

"Confident Orienteering" - one more step forward

"Confident Orienteering" - one more step forward Another step forward for my "Confident Orienteering" project: the French version is now available in print. The translation and sales are organized by the French orienteer, mapmaker, and coursesetter,  Fabrice Lapergue . The printed French version is available here, as is the digital version Due to the cost of sending hard copies and my heavy workload in writing Book 2 of this practical guide, the English version is not available at this time. However, I am open to various suggestions if someone would like to produce and sell a print run in their country. If you are not from an English-speaking country, you have the option to translate the book into your own language. I offer favorable terms for collaboration on this project. The English-language digital version of the book "Confident Orienteering" Book 1: Fundamentals  in PDF format is available here. Aleksandr Alekseyonok, January 4, 2024

My first Orienteering book is now 2 months old

My first Orienteering book is now 2 months old Tomorrow marks the two-month anniversary since I released my first ebook on orienteering title " Confident Orienteering: a Systematic Approach to Minimising Errors. Book 1:Fundamentals"   . What has transpired during these two months with the project? There have been 94 downloads of the English version and 20 of the French version (which was just released a week ago). Is that a lot or a little? On one hand, it averages 1-2 book purchases per day globally, which may not seem like much.  Yet, considering it from a different perspective: 1 Оrienteers from 32 countries have purchased the book! Spanning almost all continents, The list includes countries as distant from me as Chile, Cuba, Brazil, Hong Kong, and Japan. I am truly inspired by the idea that an orienteer from the other side of the globe is exploring my ideas. It's absolutely amazing and an experience I've never had before! 2. Over the past two months, the boo...

Review on Confident Orienteering Book

Review by  Klas Karlsson on Confident Orienteering Book Getting feedback from highly experienced, top-level athletes is such a privilege! It’s incredibly rewarding to see how the ideas in the book are being put into practice. Positive comments like these aren’t just encouraging—they’re a real motivator to keep going. I’m happy to share that Confident Orienteering: Book 2 is already in the works. A big thank you to everyone who helped bring Confident Orienteering: Book 1 – Fundamentals to life! Aleksandr Alekseyonok, November 22, 2023 Review by  Klas Karlsson "An impressive piece of work! Short introduction of myself: I have run orienteering for 45 years now. I was very promising as a Junior, and after a bit of struggling as a senior reached the Swedish A-team on a few occasions. However I never managed to make top results. During that time I was most interested in winning, not to the same degree on HOW to win. I thought that by practicing a lot I would eventually succ...
