Left, Right, or Straight #8  Hotcakes, fresh from the oven. Today's WRE long distance race in Sweden, Swedish League First Stage (29.03.2024) Which option would you choose on leg 3-4 (H21 course). The visibility of the forest is very good. but there are a lot of stones on the ground. Learning from others' errors #7

Learning from others' errors #7   Challenges in navigating from large rounded features. When an athlete misses the distance control while running along a rounded feature, it's easy for them to end up in a parallel situation. This happens because the direction from the large feature aligns with the intended bearing. The leaders on this leg chose a direct route for a reason: to establish a clear starting point ( knoll ) from which to begin the bearing based section towards the control point from the big hill. source https://www.livelox.com/Viewer/Nykopingsorienteringen/H21?classId=710504&tab=legView&leg=7 course H21E from Sweden, 23.03.2024. More about orienteering techniques and how to navigate without errors here.   Aleksandr Alekseyonok, 29 March ,2024.  previous post in this series  Learning from others' errors #6

Middle French Champ

Middle French Champ Preliminary navigation analysis   I will examine the mid-distance terrain in more detail. After the first day, the navigation technique for the relay will become clearer. I would design the relay course as a loop, utilizing the eastern area of the map. This area is well-suited for medium-length legs and offers a variety of route choice options with relatively low difficulty. There are four important principles to consider in this terrain: 1. Only leave a control point when you have a clear plan. 2. Take advantage of open glades and flat rocks whenever possible. 3. It is crucial to exit the control point accurately. Utilize a compass to navigate precisely to open areas. 4. Use the aiming-off technique when legs of your route are perpendicular to navigation lines The map contains many long navigation lines that pose challenges in quickly and accurately positionoing oneself while traversing perpendicular them. Solutions is - aiming off. Legs with diagonally crossing na

"Livelox Pick of the Week" #1

"Livelox Pick of the Week" #1 I introduce a new section in my blog called 'Livelox Pick of the Week'. Its aim is to showcase the diversity of orienteering. Orienteering competitions take place all over the world. Often, we don't even realize what is happening just a little further from our home country. However, sometimes it happens that at small competitions or club training sessions, you can find excellent maps and challenging courses. In this first edition, we present a 3-days event Columbia Gorge Classis 2024 from the USA, near Seattle, which took place from March 22nd to March 24th, 2024. What would be your route on this leg 9-10? Left, Right, or Straight: Leg #7 Analysis

Left, Right, or Straight: Leg #7 Analysis Today we're analyzing the routes for Leg 4-5, class M35 A, of the Costa Calida 2024 long-distance event. source: https://www.livelox.com/Viewer/Costa-Calida-2024-Larga-Caravaca-/M-35A?classId=716564&tab=player&leg=5 This leg stands out as the only one within this particular group, providing us with limited information for drawing definitive conclusions regarding the winning route. However, we can still make comparisons based on the relative speeds of the athletes, which will offer valuable insights What do we have? The leg length is 1660 meters. The climb along the line of the crossing is 135 meters. The length of the right-hand route is 2400 meters, with a climb of 85 meters (and all these 85 meters are in the first half of the route: 40 meters steep from KP 4, then more gentle). The length of the left route is 2200 meters. The climb is 75 meters (all at the end of the pass, with a gentle climb of 25 meters first, followed by a

Seeking sponsorship for the print version of my O-book!

Seeking sponsorship for the print version of my O-book! Hello, Dear Orienteers!  I'm currently working on the second part of the 'Confident Orienteering' practical guide - Book 2. I plan to release it by the end of 2024. The entire team that worked on Book 1 is still involved in the project, and I am immensely grateful to them for their ongoing support. Without their help, this project wouldn't have come this far. The book was originally released in English less than 5 months ago, and people from 40 countries have already bought it. Additionally, it now has versions available in French and Ukrainian .  Versions  in Danish and Polish are expected very soon (within a few weeks). Currently, all of these versions are digital formats, except for the French version, which is also available in print thanks to translator Fabrice Laperque. I'm inspired by the look of the printed version of the first book and plan to release a print version of the original guide as well. A

Book 1review

Book 1review   Today, I received the following review for my book "Confident Orienteering" Book 1: Fundamentals from Dmitry Bozhuk. "Hello, Aleksandr. I finished reading your book yesterday. It's fantastic, easy to follow with logical and consistent material. I've already recommended it to all my friends. During workouts, I started paying attention to some aspects that I used to overlook, for example, step count and the frequency of compass references. It really works. Thank you for your hard work! Looking forward to Book 2." the photo shows a printed copy of my book in French, translated by Fabrice Lapergue . the Book 1 is available here https://aliaksandr128.gumroad.com/l/jerzqm Aleksandr Alekseyonok, March 1, 2024

Left, Right, or Straight #7

Left, Right, or Straight #7 When I saw leg 4-5, I thought, 'What a not very interesting long leg with an unambiguous route on the right side along the crest of the hill.' However, it turns out that's not actually the case. Many athletes didn't take advantage of this opportunity. Do you think there's an equally viable alternative to the route on the right? source: https://www.livelox.com/Viewer/Costa-Calida-2024-Larga-Caravaca-/M-35A?classId=716564&tab=player Expect a detailed analysis of this leg in a few days.
